Rooted in the servant ministry of Jesus, Parish Social Ministry values and supports the inherent dignity and interdependence of all people, providing and opportunity to minister to the diverse needs of the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters, engaging people in various aspects through direct service, convening, and advocacy using the principles of Catholic social teaching. In Our Food Pantry

Food Pantry volunteers are trained volunteers who assist weekly, or occasionally as substiutes.  They help answering phones, accompanying neighbors to our food pantry, data collection and a variety of referrals for assistance.  

St. Vincent de Paul Society

We are a group of parishioners who offer support and services to those in need.  We help people who are having difficulties with paying their rent or utility bills or are in need of clothing or furniture.  We recognize that no work of charity is foreign to us. We consider those whom we serve as our neighbors. Confidentiality is of utmost importance to us.

We are also a group of people who are growing in our own spirituality and friendship. If you know anyone in need please encourage them to call us. Please consider joining.

Members meet monthly and work with Parish Social Ministry to make home visits in responding to a variety of human needs within our geographical area. 

Office Support

Trained volunteers assist weekly, or occasionally as substitutes, in areas including answering phones, accompanying neighbors to our food pantry, data collection and a variety of referrals for assistance.

Food Pantry

Using nonperishable goods donated by the community, assistance is given to individuals and families within our parish boundaries.  Neighbors visit the pantry monthly to choose items that they need.   The Pantry is open from Monday to Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm.  Emergency food is given out also when needed.  

St. Anthony Ministry

Individuals and families bring the foods donated by parishioners after Masses from the St. Anthony statue in the Church Gathering area to the Food Pantry located in the Convent building.

Hopemobile Drivers & Companions

The Hopemobile is used to provide scheduled rides for our parishioners to Mass and Shopping.  Drivers are trained and must have a valid New York State license.  Companions do not drive the van but assist passengers on and off the Hopemobile.  The van is wheelchair accessible. 

Transportation Assistance

Volunteers parishioners who provide transportation using their own cars within Nassau County to and from medical appointments for qualified parishioners. Drivers must be registered with the parish.

Friendly Calls

Members of the parish regularly call the homebound.  These calls are well appreciated by our neighbors.  It lets our friends know that they are not forgotten.  They love to hear what's going on in the parish and also talk about what's going on in their lives.  If you would like to be added to our list of friends or know someone you think may appreciate a call, please contact the Social Ministry Office at 516-308-3808.

Initial Bereavement Group

There are two sessions offered during the year.  One in the Fall and one in the Spring.  Each group meets for seven consecutive weeks on Wednesday afternoon from 1:30pm - 3:00pm.  The facilitator has been trained through the Diocesean program and has experienced the death of a loved one personally.  The group provides an opportunity for you to share your feelings freely and hopefully come to some understanding of the grief process for yourself and to know that you are not alone.

The group is led by a certified Grief and Bereavement Counselor who has also been trained by
the Diocese. There are 2 sessions. This is the spring session. There will also be sessions offered
in the Fall.

SALT (Widows and Widowers Support Group)

This group invites past Initial Bereavement group members to come together and continue to share their challenges and listen to each other’s experiences.  The hope is to offer support on their journey of recovery. By sharing joy and sorrows, hearts are being renewed.

The group meets the third Thursday of each month from 1:30- 3:30 pm.  For more information, please call Parish Social Ministry at 516-308-3808.

Cancer Support Group

St. Raphael Cancer Support Group is led by a trained facilitator.  The participants are warm and supportive who have experienced some form of cancer.  Cancer Support Group meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. For more information call Parish Social Ministry at 516-308-3808. 

 

 

NAMI (National Association for Mental Illness)

Led by trained facilitators for family members who are struggling to cope with mental health issues of a loved one. NAMI meets the first Tuesday of each month.
