Virtus

VIRTUS is the brand name that identifies best practices programs designed to help prevent wrongdoing and promote "rightdoing" within religious organizations. The VIRTUS programs empower organizations and people to better control risk and improve the lives of all those who interact with the Church.

All employees and volunteers in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the parishes' in the Diocese of Rockville Centre are obligated to take part in the Virtus course. Each month employees/volunteers are sent "bulletin updates" and articles on how to be progressive and forthright in protecting children and the vulnerable. Upon the start of your employment or volunteering you will be given information on how to register and participate in Virtus.

Virtus classes are being offered remotely on the Zoom Platform. There are limited face-face sessions available. Classes are also being offered in neighboring parishes. Please visit the Virtus website to create a Virtus account and register for an upcoming class. Follow these steps:

Click on First - Time Registrant (green box)
Click - Begin the Registration process, scroll down to Rockville Centre, NY - Safe Environment (Diocese). Follow and answer the questions.
Click on View a list of sessions. A listing of all in person and zoom sessions will come up. Follow the directions to sign up.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre requires all clergy, employees, and volunteers to participate in the Safe Environment Guidelines as established by the Charter for the Protection of Children/Young People (2002) and outlined in the Diocesan Child Protection Policy.

Requirements are as follows:

1. Attend a Virtus: Protecting God’s Children class
2. Undergo background screening.
3. Sign the Diocesan Code of Conduct.

Instructions to Complete the Safe Environment Requirements:

1. Log into the Virtus website: www.Virtus.org
2. Begin the registration process by creating a Virtus account. The first screen requests the
  location: Please select Rockville Centre from the drop-down list.
3. Follow directions on each page.
4. During the registration process you will receive a copy of the Code of Conduct and Pastoral Code of Conduct. Please sign each Code electronically.
5. Select the class you wish to attend.
6. Complete the background screening application provided. Background screening is
  conducted by Sterling Volunteers.

When you complete the registration process, you will have a Virtus account and an account with Sterling Volunteers. Your Virtus account will contain the date you signed the Codes of Conduct; date you submitted the background screening application and date you will attend Virtus. Please keep your username and the password for both your Virtus account and Sterling account as these are required to access each account.
